Abstract

A new spectrophotometric method for the determination of manganese with N,N,N,N'-tetrakis-(2-hydroxypropyl) ethylenediamine has been developed. The sensitivity is 0.12 μm of Mn per cm 2 for log I 0/ I= 0.001 and Beer's law is obeyed between 2 and 100 p.p.m. of manganese. An ionexchange separation of interfering ions was satisfactory for thc analysis of a variety of National Bureau of Standards samples with good accuracy. The standard deviation with a Mn-bronze was 1.25%.
