Spores of B. megatherium, which had been grown five days on liver broth were harvested according to the method of Levinson and Sevag and were then analyzed. Colorimetric analysis for manganese in these spores, essentially the oxidation of manganese to permanganate with potassium periodate, showed 46 ppm of manganese. A spectrographic analysis with an ARL 1.5 meter spectrograph was than performed in these laboratories, quantitative for manganese and qualitative for metals present.
