Abstract

Abstract Infrared and Raman polarized spectra of sodium nitroprusside single cystal, at room and liquid nitrogen temperature have been measured. Oil mull infrared spectra of the Na2[Fe(CN)5NO]·2D2O have been obtained. It has thus been possible to assign some of the fundamentals of the pentacyano-nitrosyl-ferrate(II) anion not assigned so far, and the librational modes of water molecules. Moreover we have been able to elucidate the apparent contradiction between infrared and Raman results on the bands at 662 and 652 cm−1 and to prove the im- portant role played by water in stabilizing the crystal structure.
