Abstract

The spectral response patterns of single optic nerve fibers of the California ground squirrel ( Spermophilus beecheyi) were determined in urethane-anesthetized and unanesthetized animals. Fibers showing spectrally-opponent responses were found in about the same relative proportions in both preparations. This and other evidence suggests, contrary to an earlier conclusion (Gur and Purple, 1978), that units showing spectrally-opponent response patterns in the ground squirrel visual system are not found only under abnormal physiological conditions of the animal.
