Abstract

High resolution optical absoprtion spectra of the ion Er 3+ (intrinsic or introduced as a probe) have been measured in cuprates R 2Cu 2O 5 (R = Er, Lu, Y, Tb, Tm) related to high-T c superconductors RBa 2Cu 3O 7− x . Er 3+ ground doublet splittings, magnetic transition temperatures, energies of crystal field levels for the ground multiplet of R have been determined. Splittings of spectral lines remain also at T > T N due to short-range order indicating the low-dimensional character of the copper magnetic lattice.
