Abstract

Geometric anisotropy in the oxide aperture shape of a VCSEL causes spectral splitting between the otherwise degenerate higher order TEM/sub 01/ and TEM/sub 10/ modes. For a given aperture thickness, the degree of splitting is dependent on the aperture aspect ratio and average size. This splitting can be calculated using a scalar variational method.
