Abstract

Identification of the light absorbing organelle responsible for triggering migration of melanin granules in the retinal pigment epithelium is sought. The action spectrum for pigment migration was constructed by an equal criterion method from measurements of % migration as a function of light exposure at various wavelengths obtained from histological sections. This action spectrum is compared to three theoretical action spectra expected for triggering by retinal rods, melanin and myeloid bodies respectively. The general shape of the experimental action spectrum is that expected for red rod triggering of migration and is not what is expected for melanin or for myeloid body triggering.
