Spectral pollution of a non-compact operator

Abstract

The study of the magnetohydrodynamic stability of a plasma leads to a problem of determination of the spectrum of a differential operator the resolvent of which is not compact. Generally, the spectral approximation of such problems is numerically non-stable (spectral pollution). We present here some mathematical aspects in order to obtain stable spectral approximations.
