Thompson, A. R. ; Maxwell, A. Abstract The characteristics of continuum radio bursts from the sun, over the frequency range 25-70000 Mc/s, are reviewed. Spectral records show the development of these bursts. They are generally complex in character but may be divided into five main categories: large bursts (type IV) generally covering many octaves and lasting from 5 minutes to several hours, at the time of important flares; background radiation to noise storms; short-lived bursts, of a few minutes' duration, following certain groups of fast-drift bursts; some bursts limited to the microwave range; one example of a continuum storm that lasted for 4 days, occurred mainly at frequencies less than 100 Mc/s and was not flare-initiated. Type IV radiation is generally continuous in both time and frequency but sometimes reveals a pulsating structure; this characteristic is described and illustrated. The properties of the bursts are discussed in terms of existing models, based on the supposition that the radiation is generated by deceleration of electrons of relativistic velocities in magnetic fields (synchrotron emission). The maximum frequency of the radiation is discussed in terms of electron energies and magnetic fields in the solar atmosphere.
