Abstract
We engineers and other technical professionals are not noted for our involvement in nontechnical activities—whether they be at local or global levels. There are probably several reasons for this. Even in school our interests are usually more narrowly focused on those courses we deem of immediate importance and usefulness. We are not noted for our communication and human-relations skills. And, like the rest of the populace, our interest in certain issues flags when times are good.
