Abstract

0.2 mol% of Sm3+ or Dy3+ ions doped magnesium calcium bismuth titanate ((MgCa)2Bi4Ti5O20) ceramic powders have been synthesized by a solid state reaction method in order to study the photoluminescence properties. Photoluminescence spectra of Sm3+: (MgCa)2 Bi4Ti5O20 ceramics have shown strong reddish-orange emission at 599 nm (4G5/2 → 6H7/2) with an excitation wavelength λexci = 405 nm (6H5/2 → 4F7/2) and Dy3+: (MgCa)2Bi4Ti5O20 ceramics, have shown yellow emission at 583 nm (4F9/2 → 6H13/2) with λexci = 426 nm (6H15/2 → 4G11/2). Both the rare earth ions (Sm3+ or Dy3+) containing ceramics have displayed their brighter emission performance from their measured spectral results. In addition, these powder ceramics have also been characterized for their structures and morphology from the measurements of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray analysis results.
