Abstract

Nanocomposites of host Zn2SiO4 and Cu2+:Zn2SiO4, Ni2+:Zn2SiO4 and Co2+:Zn2SiO4 powders have successfully been synthesised by means of sol–gel method. Their structural and morphological studies have been carried out from the measurement of their X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscope and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Such studies have revealed their grain sizes in (20–25 nm) exhibiting their structures in willemite. Besides these, optical absorption and luminescence spectra of these nanocomposites have also been investigated. Optical absorption spectra of Cu2+:Zn2SiO4 (blue), Ni2+:Zn2SiO4 (green) and Co2+:Zn2SiO4 (pinkish red) in their xero-gel glasses and from their absorption profiles, crystal field parameter (D q ) and energy level characteristic Racah parameters of (B and C) have been computed. For these sol–gel powder materials showing bright colours, their emission profiles have also been measured and these emissions are found to arise due to the occurrence of d–d transitions.
