Abstract

The strongly colored complexes of the d6 ions Fe2+, Ru2+ and Os2+ with organic ligands containing the α-diimine grouping N= C-C = N, are similar in many respects to organic dyes. The visible and near U V spectrum of tris — -α -diimine iron(II) complexes consists of two composite bands with λ max — 500–600 mµ (A) and 350 – 400 mµ (B), respectively. The form of the A-band is nearly identical for a wide variety of diimine ligands (band width, δ- = 900 ± 100 cm-1, shoulder at 1200 – 1500 cm-1). The broad B-band is less characteristic and of low intensity in complexes of aliphatic diimines.
