Abstract

A general method has been developed that specifies the values of defined immobilized enzyme catalyst performance parameters for the economical retrofitting of an in situ soluble enzyme batch process to an immobilized enzyme batch or continuous process. Performance parameters include the immobilized enzyme half-life, the carrier loading, the enzyme—carrier activity expression and the recovery of enzymatic activity during the immobilized enzyme preparation portion of the overall process. Sensitivity analysis suggests which performance parameters should be involved in a course of action taken to improve the feasibility of a potential process and reference is made to reported performance data for some immobilized enzyme preparations.
