Abstract

The seed lectins from some plant species belonging to the family Leguminosae and family Euphorbiaceae were tested against blood of sheep, chicken, frog, guinea-pig, albino rat, rabbit, cow and man. The agglutination reactions were studied in haemagglutination plastic plates and end-point titres computed for each seed extract. The seed extracts from Dolichos lab lab Linn., Lathyrus sativus Linn., and Lens esculentis Linn. were found to be specific for guinea-pig blood. Dolichos biflorus Linn. seed extract reacted with human blood (group A) only. The seed extracts from Phaseolus vulgaris Linn., Phaseolus nanus Linn., Ricinus communis Linn., Abrus precatorius Linn. and Croton tiglium Linn. gave a combination of reactions which differentiated the blood of cow, chicken, sheep, rabbit, frog and rat.
