Abstract

Completely specific experimental autoallergic lesions of the submandibular or parotid salivary glands were induced in Lewis rats by immunization with the homologous organ in complete Freund’s adjuvant. The induction of the submandibular gland lesion could be markedly inhibited by pretreatment with the antigen administered in incomplete Freund’s adjuvant on 1, 2 or 8 occasions over a period of 2 to 4 weeks prior to lesion induction. Two pretreatments with either submandibular or parotid salivary gland antigen were capable of inhibiting the induction of the submandibular gland lesion. This lack of specificity suggests that different antigens are responsible for the induction and the inhibition of induction of this lesion.
