Abstract

Standardization is essential for successful development of a large market for digital TV systems and services. Due to the novelty of the technologies involved and the initially very small market having fast growth, the consensus in industry is that standardization via formal procedures in the existing standards bodies takes too long. Promising opportunities in digital audio, video and multimedia systems and applications have made it possible to organize specification consortia in a phase, preceding formal standardization. In these consortia many industry players from different parts of the value chain participate, with their best engineers and managers as delegates. Three clearly visible examples of these consortia are Digital Video Broadcasting in Europe, the Advanced Television Systems Committee in the USA and the Digital Audio- Visual Council with a global approach. In this paper a short description is given of the work by DVB. Ongoing and near future work on the Multimedia Home Platform and Home Networks is described in a little more detail, with its relation to the work in DAVIC and ATS C. Finally some conclusions are presented.
