Abstract

We investigate the specific heat of the dilute Kondo system ( La, Ce)B 6 between 0.06 K and 4 K in an external magnetic field up to 7 Tesla. The experimental results are in good agreement with the resonance level model. They are also compared with the Coqblin-Schrieffer model. The comparisons show that the ground state of the Ce 3+ ion in LaB 6 is a Γ 8 quartet.
