Abstract

AbstractThe magnetic phases and crystal distortions occurring in TbPO4 at low temperatures are described in mean field theory taking into account the influence of exchange and dipole interaction, Jahn‐Teller coupling, and the external field. The calculations are compared with the results of specific heat and magneto‐caloric measurements. The theory reflects the qualitative behaviour but there are still considerable differences. In an extended model, a magnetisation‐dependent exchange interaction is introduced leading to a better agreement in low fields.
