Abstract
Publisher Summary This chapter explains the specific adsorption of metal cations on the surface of lipid membrane systems. Studies of the metal cations binding with artificial lipid membrane systems are of special interest in connection with great physiological role of these cations. Some of these metals of life are necessary for the function of living organisms. Other metals are toxical. In the common case, there is not a strict border between toxical and untoxical metals, because in the large concentration of organisms some untoxical metals can lead to a number of diseases. In this connection, the ecological aspect of the metal cations binding with lipid membranes is attracting special attention. The bilayer lipid membranes (BLMs) separating two aqueous solutions have been mainly used as a model of biological membranes.
