Abstract

The specific adsorption of Cs + and K + ions on the bismuth electrode has been studied by measuring the Tafel plots of the hydrogen evolution reaction. The shift of the corrected Tafel plots when passing from the acidified solutions of the surface-inactive Li + salts to the solutions of Cs + or K + salts was observed. The experimental shifts of the corrected Tafel plots were compared with the respective theoretical values calculated on the basis of the capacity measurement data by the charge due to specifically adsorbed Cs + and K + ions. Good agreement between experimental results and calculated values is a convincing proof of the specific adsorption of the alkali metal cations on the electrodes.
