Abstract

The specific adsorption effects of various alkylammonium cations on the reduction of nickel(II) ion with a dropping mercury electrode were studied. In the solutions containing a small cation such as NH 4 +, CH 3NH 3 +, (CH 3) 2NH 2 +, (CH 3) 3NH + or C 2H 5NH 3 +, it was found that the charge transfer proceeded on the outer Helmholtz plane. On the other hand, in solutions containing a large cation such as (C 2H 5) 2NH 2 +, (C 2H 5) 3NH +, (C 2H 5) 4N + or (HOC 2H 4) 4N +, it was considered that overlap effect between the hydration cosphere of these cations and that of nickel(II) ion played an important role in the electrode process.
