Abstract

Scent marking behaviors of male and female golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) were observed in response to conspecific or heterospecific (M. brandti) male odors. Flank marking by males and both vaginal and flank marking by females were more frequent in the presence of conspecifics' odors. These examples of mammalian scent marking thus appear to be similar in their species specificity to a wide variety of signaling behaviors in other animals.
