Abstract

This paper briefly summarizes the major points made in nine talks at the symposium on Species and evolution in clonal organisms sponsored by the American Society of Zoologists, the Society of Systematic Zoology, and the California Academy of Sciences on 28 December 1988, in San Francisco, California (table 1). The summary is followed by an account of a roundtable discussion at the end of the symposium, during which questions from the audience were addressed to symposium participants. We believe that the discussion, in particular, offers valuable insight into many complex problems encountered in research on species and their evolutionary significance, and hope that it will be especially useful in the design and organization of future research in this area.
