Abstract

Between 1812 and 1862 American geology underwent rapid development to become a specialized, highly professional science practiced by individual researchers whose achievements received world-wide acclaim. This development may be ascribed to freedom from the conflict of uncompromising traditions so prevalent in the early development of European geology, the dependency of American geologists on field observation, and the high level of scientific communication with Europe. The thinking of American geologists was dominated by an interest in exploration, classification and theory with little utilitarian purpose.
