Abstract

As a concept in international trade, competitiveness has received widespread interest and attention. There are many indicators of national specialization in the international trade literature. Among these indicators, we focus on Balassa's revealed comparative advantage (RCA). The emphasis in this study will be on identifying the forces underlying the comparative advantage of the tourism industry. Empirical findings present that international tourism in Korea has relatively comparative disadvantage compared to other countries except Japan in terms of RCA. The dominant players in tourism worldwide since 1960s such as Spain, USA, Italy, and France. Furthermore, according to the analysis result, it shows that each country's competitive structure by the criterion of the RCA is generally consistent with the trade ratios with the exception of the United Kingdom.
