MRS HARPOON flipped through the pages of the staff room edition of eye, and paused at page 41, or was it 42? She stirred tepid tea in her special headteacher’s mug and pondered. Who were these people who won glitzy Early Years Awards, year after year? Who would receive the Childminder of the Year accolade for 2008? The Lifetime Achievement Award… The Most Creative or Imaginative Shield? Which settings would be heralded as the most inclusive, family-friendly or exceptionally caring? Who were these fortunate early years workers who would, circa September 2008 shake hands with a dignitary upon a platform at Roehampton University? Not that Mrs Alicia Harpoon, the newly appointed saviour (hopefully) of Special Measures School, really cared. But, as her previous school had obtained three successive Ofsted ‘outstandings’… well, then why not?
