Abstract

Recent studies have led to the recognition of the importance of previously unrecognized small proteins, defined as proteins up to 50 amino acids in length, in a variety of biological systems. The “Small Proteins, Big Questions” virtual conference on small proteins in bacteria and archaea was held 12 to 14 January 2021. This conference, which focused on the discovery and analysis of small proteins and small open reading frames in prokaryotic systems, was organized by Todd Gray, Kai Papenfort, Gigi Storz, and Joe Wade and had over 300 participants. Sessions included research presentations, discussions of the latest techniques for small protein identification, including bioinformatic, ribosomal profiling, and proteomics approaches, and prospects for future study in the area. The meeting featured excellent presentations and robust discussions.
