Abstract
InAugust 2006, the EUROSummer Institute ESIXXIV onOptimization challenges in engineering—methods, software, and applicationswas held inLutherstadtWittenberg, Germany. This issue of Mathematical Methods of Operations Research contains a selection of the papers presented at that meeting. EURO Institutes are organized on an annual basis by EURO, the Association of European Operational Research Societies. For two weeks, they bring together 20–30 carefully selected junior scientists andgive them theopportunity of joint discussions, of forming networks with international colleagues, and of meeting renowned researchers in their field. This is accomplished by a combination of an inspiring scientific program with interesting social activities. ESI 2006 was organized by EUROPT (the EURO working group on Continuous Optimization) and GOR (the German OR-Society), and took place in the buildings of the LEUCOREA foundation in the city of Lutherstadt Wittenberg.
