I joined SIG 7 five or six years ago. Prior to that, I had belonged to another SIG—to which a friend had recruited me. Then I realized that SIG 7 is much more closely aligned with my professional interests in aural rehabilitation (AR). How has your involvement with the SIG helped you in your career? My clinical and teaching areas include AR, counseling, hearing aids and cochlear implants, so the Perspectives articles and convention offerings of SIG 7 directly relate to my work. How do you carve out time to volunteer with the SIG while working in your full-time job and balancing other commitments? What advice would you give to someone who’d like to get more involved in the SIG, including how you get support from your supervisor/institution? I asked about the time and commitment before volunteering so that I would know whether I would have time to fulfill the volunteer position. I believe that our SIG has worked and continues to work to clarify volunteer roles and time commitments so that possible volunteers can consider whether they can participate and communicate volunteer requirements to administrators to better gauge their support. What is your favorite recent Perspectives article, and why? My favorite recent Perspectives article from SIG 7 is “Music Perception in Adult Users of Cochlear Implants: A Brief Review” by Robert C. Jensen and Sarah Hargus Ferguson from May 2015. As an audiologist, sometimes I am so highly focused on improved speech recognition that I forget about music perception and enjoyment. This article highlights recent findings that help me discuss expectations and strategies with CI patients.
