Abstract

The Mannheim Gridshell, Germany, is one of the world’s most important buildings of lightweight architecture. Its free-form shape and large span are impressive features of its filigree construction. With this extraordinary structure, Pritzker Prize winner Frei Otto created an experimental building that in many respects pushed the boundaries of engineering and is still unparalleled up to the present day. Originally planned as a temporary structure, it has survived the test of time and due to its uniqueness has gained a reputation as a cultural monument of outstanding significance. However, the years have taken their toll on the structure. The roof supporting structure shows noticeable deformations, and major damage has been detected, making comprehensive renovation necessary in order to ensure long-term preservation of the building. The engineering firm Fast + Epp has taken on the challenges of the supporting structure. With a sensitivity to the monument, a balance must be struck between making the necessary reinforcements and repairs while preserving the character of the building.
