By this time (thirteen years after the foundation of the Geological Society of South Africa in 1895) geology was already a well established and an economically important profession in South Africa. Widespread mapping activities had been in progress since about the 1860s and important mineral deposits, including gold, were already reported from various localities in South Africa.
