Abstract

School nurses are in an ideal position to educate young people about the different methods of contraception available, which includes emergency contraception. There are 15 different contraceptive options in the UK, 13 of which are reversible and therefore potentially suitable for young people. A professional's lack of knowledge concerning the suitability of methods for young people can limit the options offered. Furthermore, young people may have concerns around the side effects of contraception, including weight gain, acne and mood changes.
