Abstract
Given unique considerations and complexities associated with pediatric transplantation, the following chapter outlines aspects that clinicians should take into account with regard to pediatric solid organ transplantation. The role of dynamically changing developmental stages and the necessity to approach the entire family unit as the patient, given the role that caregivers play in pediatric patients’ lives, are key differences that are to be attended to when caring for a pediatric transplant patient. This chapter outlines pediatric considerations for the pre-transplant medical and psychosocial evaluation, the selection and listing process, the wait list process, and medical and psychosocial outcomes. Unique aspects include countertransference issues, the prevalence of nonadherence, and transitioning to adult-centered care, which will be reviewed. This chapter attempts to highlight key differences or areas that are most impacted by the developmental nature of pediatric transplantation.
