Special applications

Abstract

This chapter discusses various special applications and introduces a diverse group of subjects dealing with HVAC. It states reasons for using thermal storage, and identifies the features of radiant heating and names examples of where it can be an excellent system choice. Various room air-distribution systems are described and it is explained as to why it can be advantageous to have a separate outside air unit as well as the main air-handler. The chapter covers topics on some special heating, cooling, and ventilation applications. It starts with radiant heating and cooling. From radiant heating and cooling it moves on to thermal storage. Thermal storage is a method of reducing the need for large equipment and reducing energy expenses. It considers the ground as a vast heat source or sink. It also explains the ventilation and various topics related to ventilation. This is followed by an examination of the issues of air distribution in rooms that do not have operable windows. The chapter discusses various standard ways of delivering air to rooms and their relative merits and popularity. Moreover, separate dedicated outside air units that are particularly valuable in dealing with locations where there is high humidity and substantial outdoor air requirements are briefly described.
