Abstract

Whatever discussion may occur about the Hippocratic Oath's relevance to 21st century medicine, its commitment to protection of information about patients remains unchanged (panel). Confidentiality is arguably the oldest rule in western medicine, although the means by which information is collected, stored, and disseminated were unimaginable to ancient practitioners.
