Abstract

Discusses how statistical process control of products is increasingly demanded by suppliers for the prevention rather than detection of defects. Assert that, according to Ford supplier Valeo Embrayages, it is the way it is applied that makes all the difference. Discusses how, before the new SPC era, controlling production meant stopping production. Contends the result should be a continuous improvement in product quality. Considers that the tools which are required to implement SPC are very few. Asserts technology is only a minor part of an SPC programme. Concludes that a multi‐disciplinary approach is very important to successful SPC.
