Abstract

Witch flounder ( Glyptocephalus cynoglossus) were examined for reproductive development from nine locations in the Newfoundland-Labrador area of the northwest Atlantic. The spawning season was long in most locations, with the time of main spawning varying throughout the area. In the east, intensive spawning occurred during March-June with little variation in mean temperature throughout the area. At similar depths in the more westerly areas, on the other hand, spawning was most intensive during January-February, but at mean temperatures higher than those in the other areas investigated.
