Abstract

Coastal wetland in Binhai New Area changed in the past period of 1985–2015. Remote sensing and investigation data were used for wetland extracting in Binhai New Area, and the wetland coverage rate in1985, 1995, 2005, 2015 was 76.3%,75.6%,71.7%, and 59.1% separately. Wetland areas decreased 56,108.2 hectares, for the first mid and last ten years, while wetland areas decreased by 2,503, 12,737.7, and 40,867.5 hectares separately. In the past 30 years, the type of 35% coastal wetland in Binhai New Area has changed (the change ratio of land use attribute type is 32.5%). The proportion of wetland change exceeds the proportion of overall land use. From the results of the land use transfer matrix, we can conclude that human activities are the fundamental driving factors for the change of coastal wetland. With the advancement of urbanization and industrialization in the region, the coastal wetland system has degraded significantly. Therefore, the spatiotemporal changes of wetlands in Binhai New Area are policy-oriented, and human activities are the driving factors for the reduction and type changes of wetlands in Binhai New Area.
