Abstract
A new spatial nonlinear beam element allowing for arbitrary number of nodes is proposed. The element which embodies the idea of weak form quadrature is established on the basis of the absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF). The order of Taylor expansion over the cross section can be chosen as desired, enabling the element to cope with complex cross-sectional behavior such as high-order shear and warping deformation. Four typical examples are presented and satisfactorily results are obtained, demonstrating the effectiveness of the formulation for the analysis of spatial beams with strong geometrical nonlinearity.
