Abstract

Comparison of the corrosion behavior between two different locations in an as-cast Pb-Ca-Sn battery grid was conducted. Optical microscopy was used to characterize the microstructures of the two grid locations. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy diagrams, and an equivalent circuit analysis were used to evaluate the electrochemical response at varying H2SO4 concentrations and working temperatures. Photomicrographs show that Location A has coarser grain and cellular sizes than Location B. The EIS results show that the corrosion resistance of both grid locations decreases as the H2SO4 concentration and working temperature are increased. The experimental results also show that Location A has a higher corrosion resistance than Location B.
