Abstract
The influence of compliant coatings on the transition in shear flows has extensively been studied since the pioneering experiments of Kramer [1]. There is now theoritical and numerical evidence that, although compliant walls may have a favorable influence on transition triggered by Tollmien-Schlichting waves (TSI), for highly compliant walls flow-induced surface instability (FISI) may become dangerous. A very recent survey of the various instability mechanisms in shear flows with compliant coatings can be found in Davies and Carpenter [2]. However, there is no clear answer about the capability of compliant coating to postpone transition.KeywordsDirect Numerical SimulationStreamwise VelocitySpatial EvolutionWall DisplacementCompliant WallThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
