Abstract

By application of super twisted nematic liquid crystals to spatial light modulators, readout light can be modulated sufficiently even if the photoconductive layer is as thin as 1 μm. This is in contrast to the case of conventional spatial light modulators, which require a thick photoconductive layer (>10 μm). Also, the sensitivity is greatly increased (2 μW/cm2 at the applied sinusoidal frequency of 50 Hz).
