The spatial heterogeneity of the processes and parameters which determine surface runoff has given rise to different attempts to improve on the lumped system representation of the watershed. Various techniques, ranging from the distributed formulation, component-type lumped models and the use of partial source-area and geomorphological concepts are reviewed in order to identify possible areas of future inquiry. The synthesis of the innovative contributions of the recent approaches is suggested.
