Abstract

As shown by Foias and Prodi in the limit of infinite times the solutions of the two-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations depend only on a finite number of modes, a number for which rigorous estimates can be obtained. A survey of these results is given together with further developments, notably in connection with the numerical approximation to the exact solutions.
