Abstract

MAKING PEST MANAGEMENT DECISIONS over large geographic areas requires much time, many resources, and considerable expertise. Additional managers must oversee the collection of different types of data from many hundreds of locations. The sizes of data sets created in large pest management projects require efficient ways to manipulate data and display them in a variety of forms. In addition, managers must have the expertise to interpret these displays for use in decisionmaking. During the last several years, many pest management programs have begun to use computer-aided mapping to assist in making faster, more-informed decisions. The rise in computer-aided mapping has been facilitated by the increased availability of microcomputers, an aggressive and competitive sales campaign by mapping software companies, and an increased demand for managers to consider the environmental costs of pest control decisions.
