Abstract
This paper deals with the role of spatial cues in a cinematic discourse. The paper suggests categories of cinematic spatial cues, and their possible modes of usage. The analysis of the cues presupposes that their selection derives from artistic choice. The paper argues that the choice and usage of spatial cues in a specific discourse predicts its overall poetics and thus indicates its overall aesthetics tendencies, the use of narrative conventions and its ideological directions. The functions of spatial cues are being examined here in two films which represent two extremes on the scale of spatial poetics. Jurassic Park by Steven Spielberg represents the Hollywood system's tendency towards spatial coherence and Prospero's Books by the British director Peter Greenaway represents an opposing tendency towards spatial incoherence.
