Abstract

The previous chapter dealt with topics that were primarily related to optimizing the power output and conversion efficiency of diode-laser arrays and single-element diode lasers. This chapter is devoted to principal concepts related to spatial and spectral mode discrimination in semiconductor diode-laser arrays. We begin in Sect. 3.1 by reviewing the symmetric three-layer planar waveguide model. This model is central to our understanding of the spatial-mode properties of both diode lasers and diode-laser arrays, as it is often used to elucidate the waveguide and spatial-mode characteristics. Analysis of specific multilayer diode-laser array structures is dealt with in Chap. 4.KeywordsDiode LaserActive LayerSpontaneous EmissionLaser ArraySlave LaserThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
