Abstract

Spasticity is a common symptom of neurological diseases in cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, stroke and spinal cord injury. Spasticity is only one component of upper motor neurone syndrome and often coexists with weakness, spasms, stiffness, fatigue and reduced dexterity. Spasticity occurs when there is an imbalance between inhibitory and excitatory signals from the spinal cord and brain. The combination of these positive and negative features makes the assessment and management of each patient unique. Spasticity is complex and requires careful evaluation within a multidisciplinary team. Nurses, doctors, physiotherapists and occupational therapists work together through educating the person, carers and family on a variety of treatment options tailored uniquely to the individual person's needs.
