Abstract

Abstract In this study, Al-Ti-Al2O3 composite was fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique. The effects of Al2O3 reinforcement on the densification, microstructure and hardness of the sintered Al-Ti-Al2O3 composite were investigated. The data obtained during sintering was used to analyse the densification behaviour of the sintered composites during SPS. The dispersion of the Al2O3 in the Al matrix during mixing and after sintering was evaluated using secondary electron and optical microscope respectively. Microhardness was utilized to study the properties of the composites. The results revealed that the reinforcing Al2O3 is homogenously dispersed within the Al matrix. The shrinkage rates show only two densification stages relating plastic deformation of the particles and rapid densification of the composite. The relative density of composites decreased with an increase in Al2O3 content in the Al matrix. The hardness of the composite increased with Al2O3 addition.
